MONSTER MASH-UP: The Blubbernimbus

MONSTER MASH-UP: The Blubbernimbus

(a.k.a. the Wet Blanket of the Skies)

Physical Description:
The Blubbernimbus resembles a grotesque fusion of whale, jellyfish, and stormcloud. Its lower half is glistening blubber, with fins that flap about as if perpetually trying to remember how to swim in mid-air. From its back rises a great translucent sac, like a swollen balloon of storm vapour, constantly leaking drizzle. Thin, trailing tendrils of mucus and static electricity dangle down like the world’s least festive bunting. Its eyes are beady and suspicious, peering out from folds of fat like guilty pickled onions, and its bulk moves with both the majesty of a cloudbank and the grace of a damp sponge being lobbed at a wall.

Imagine if Poseidon sneezed while looking at a zeppelin, and you’re halfway there.

Combat Style

The Blubbernimbus is as subtle as a pub brawl. It lumbers about in the sky until it sees a gathering of mortals beneath it, then:

  • Splish-Splash: Dumps torrents of seawater from its blubber folds, ruining armour polish and picnic sandwiches.

  • Thunder-Burp: Emits a shocking belch that leaves hair standing on end and tempers frayed.

  • Dive-Bellyflop: In moments of inspiration, forgets it can float and attempts to squash enemies under a bellyful of regret.

  2. The Sky Regatta: Aristocratic sky-yachts are being ruined by unexpected bellyflops; the PCs must chase the beast away before the nobility riot.

  3. The Cult of Dampness: A sect of druids claim the Blubbernimbus is the divine child of sky and sea; unfortunately, it’s less interested in worship than in squashing sheep.
